Price bouncing between support and resistance zones

Support & Resistance: The Only Levels That Matter

Technical analysis · 4 min read · October 2026

Strip away every indicator and markets still respect the same thing: levels where price repeatedly turned. Support and resistance are the market's memory — and trading with that memory is simpler than most systems admit.

How levels form

A level forms where buyers or sellers previously committed in size. Each test that holds adds participants defending it; each test weakens it slightly as orders get filled. Three clean touches make a level worth watching. Five make it significant. The more obvious the level, the more the market cares about it.

Zones, not lines

Beginners draw a precise line and get stopped by a 5-pip overshoot. Professionals mark a zone — a 10–30 pip band around the level. Price is driven by thousands of participants, not a laser. Give levels breathing room and place stops beyond the zone, not on its edge.

Role reversal

The highest-probability locations come from polarity: broken resistance becomes support, broken support becomes resistance. When price breaks a level and pulls back to retest it, you get a level with a story — old sellers trapped, new buyers stepping in — plus a natural stop just beyond the retest extreme.

Putting it together

Mark the obvious levels on the daily chart, drop to your timeframe, and wait for price to come to your levels instead of chasing it. Combine with market structure to know whether to expect a bounce or a break — and never trade a level without knowing where you are wrong.
